General Cleaning Guidelines:
- DO use a clean, soft, damp cloth to polish and remove finger prints and dirt
- DON'T use household cleaner, window cleaning solutions, abrasive cleansers, bleaches, solvents, polishes or other chemical compounds.
- DO follow specific instructions shown below
Unlacquered Polished Brass (Natural) |
Bronze Plated |
| |
Type of brass initially polished to mirror finish - No protective coating - will age naturally. If polishing is necessary, use a quality brass polish and soft cloth. |
Like brass plated, this is a type of finish that is applied on steel hardware and coated steel with bronze. |
Lacquered Polished Brass |
Galvanized |
| |
A protective baked lacquer coating is added to sustain a shiny finish for many years. Although this protective coating is pretty durable, using brass polish or harsh cleaners and detergents can damage this finish. Use a soft, damp cloth and simply wipe. |
This is a special type of finish applied to metal items. Galvanizing may be either hot-dipped or coated-technically, electroplated. Both finishes are waterproof and hence most hardware items are galvanized. |
Burnished Antique Brass |
Brushed Nickel |
| |
This is a brown, slightly highlighted and hand-produced finish, with discreet brushing in a vertical direction. This type of finish will hide the slow accumulation of nicks, spots and scratches fairly well and can be further protected with waxing. For maintenance, simply wipe with a soft damp cloth and be careful of using brass polish, harsh cleaners and detergents which can damage your hardware. |
This is an attractive and popular satin-relieved finish that can be compared to stainless steel. This type of finish, though durable will show some slight tarnishing under normal use. Wipe with a damp cloth to clean. An application of neutral-color wax on this finish from time to time can also be used for preventative care. |
Oil-Rubbed Bronze |
Chrome Plated |
| |
This is a brass finish with a flat, dark-brown patina which is almost black in color. Oil Rubbed Bronze has no protective lacquer and will wear to a dull brass finish with time and handling. Wipe gently with a clean soft cloth only. Do not use polish or cleaners of any kind. |
Chrome plate is a highly polished finish and a popular choice because of its high resistance to corrosion and good-looking appearance. Chrome plating is a finishing treatment applied by using the electrolytic deposition of chromium. |
Polished Nickel |
Antique Finish |
| |
Polished nickel is brass, mirror-polished and nickel-plated having a shiny silver with warm, amber undertones. Natural aging may develop a dull, milky-white tarnish, especially humid environments. For regular maintenance and removing tarnish, use a soft cloth and a mild solution of household ammonia. |
Weathered and antiqued finishes are chemically treated to age them. There are a variety of antique finishes like weathered copper, antique copper, antique brass, etc. The resulting effect is a piece that looks as though it has been around for many, many years. |
