GLASS DIFFERENCES

Clear. Crisp. True Color.

If you're investing in a high-end shower, railing, or custom glass project, clarity matters. While standard clear glass offers beautiful transparency, low iron (ultra-clear) glass takes it a step further—delivering brighter edges, reduced green tint, and truer color visibility. At Wingspan, we'll help you understand the difference so you can choose the glass that best complements your design.

When designing a custom shower, railing, or glass feature, clarity matters. At first glance, all clear glass may look the same—but there's a noticeable difference between standard clear glass and low iron (ultra clear) glass. If you're investing in a high-end space and want the absolute best visual result, understanding this difference can make a big impact.

What is Standard Clear Glass?

Standard clear glass contains natural iron content as part of the manufacturing process. While it still appears clear, the iron creates a subtle green hue, especially noticeable:

  • On thicker glass (3/8", 1/2", and above)
  • When looking at the glass edge
  • Against white or light colored tile
  • In high-end, minimalist designs

In many applications, the green tint is minimal and perfectly acceptable. For most bathrooms and shower enclosures, standard clear glass provides beautiful, clean results.

What is Low Iron (Ultra Clear) Glass?

Low iron glass—often referred to as ultra clear glass—is manufactured with significantly reduced iron content. This process removes most of the green tint and results in:

  • True color clarity
  • Brighter, crisper transparency
  • A cleaner edge appearance
  • More accurate color reflection of tile, stone, and finishes

When places side by side with standard glass, the difference becomes obvious—especially in thicker panels.

Low iron glass is ideal for:

  • High-end custom showers
  • Luxury tile installations
  • Glass railings
  • Modern, all-white bathrooms
  • Projects where color accuracy is critical

Why the Difference Matters

If you've invested in beautiful tile, bold stone, or custom finishes, you likely want those materials to be seen exactly as intended. Low iron glass allows:

  • Whites to stay white
  • Light tile to stay bright
  • Natural stone to show its true tone
  • Hardware finishes to stand out clearly

For projects where clarity is the priority, low iron glass elevates the final result.

Watch the Difference in Action

In this video, Matt walks through a side-by-side comparison of standard 1/2" glass and low iron glass, showing how the green hue appears in traditional glass—and how ultra clear glass enhances visibility and brightness.

Seeing them next to each other makes the difference unmistakable.

Which Should You Choose?

Both standard clear and low iron glass are high-quality, durable, and safety-tempered. The decision ultimately comes down to:

  • Your budget
  • The overall design vision
  • The importance of true color clarity in your space

If you're building or remodeling and want a premium, high-clarity finish, low iron glass may be the perfect upgrade.
